Soil chemistry

I thank Linda Candelaria, Gavin Gillman, Robert Harter, Mark Noll, Stom Ohno, and Scott Young for their suggestions and encouragement to write a third edition of Soil Chemistry. I am especially grateful to Linda Candelaria for her excellent suggestions on additions and revisions.

This edition tries to emphasize that the soil and soil solution are the center and heart of the environment. The chemical composition of the biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere depends greatly on the chemistry of the soil.

Since the second edition appeared, much of the interest in soil chemistry has been on the fate of so-called toxic chemicals and elements in soils. This edition points out that (1) all of the chemical elements—toxic and beneficial—were always in the soil, (2) the soil is the safest part of the environment in which to deposit our wastes, (3) there are wise and unwise ways to utilize soil for waste disposal, (4) soil chemistry degrades wastes and converts them into benign or useful substances, (5) environmental activists and the popular media usually ignore the dose-response concept that is central to toxicology and to soil fertility, and (6) how much is in the soil, how fast it is changing, and how easily it transfers to plants and water are more important than what is there. Soil chemistry can answer those important questions. A goal for the future is to answer them better.

The use of aluminium for aluminum, occasionally of natrium and kalium for sodium and potassium, and often of essential elements for essential nutrients is not affectation. The intent is to bring more international usage and correctness into the book. Soil chemistry is a global issue.

Brian McNeal and George O'Connor were unable to work on this edition of our book. 1 retained much of their excellent contributions to the previous editions. Any errors or omissions are my responsibility. I would be grateful if readers would call them to my attention.

Structural and lithological characteristics of the Bayankhongor Ophiolite Zone, Central Mongolia

The mechanism of continental growth of Central Asia is currently debated between models invoking continuous subduction–accretion, or punctuated accretion due to closure of multiple ocean basins. Ophiolites in Central Asia may represent offscraped fragments in an accretionary complex or true collisional sutures. The Bayankhongor ophiolite, a NW–SE-striking sublinear belt 300 km long and 20 km wide, is the largest ophiolite in Mongolia and possibly Central Asia. We present results of the first detailed structural and lithological study of the ophiolite. The study area is divided into four zones: Baidrag complex, Burd Gol, Bayankhongor, and Dzag zones. The Archaean Baidrag complex comprises tonalitic granulites and metasediments. The Burd Gol zone is a metamorphosed sedimentary and igneous me´lange. The Bayankhongor zone contains the dismembered ophiolite forming a serpentinite me´lange. The Dzag zone consists of asymmetrically folded chlorite–mica schists resembling meta-turbidites. The structure is dominated by steeply dipping, NE directed thrusts and NE-vergent folds. We suggest the Bayankhongor ophiolite marks the closure of an ocean separating two microcontinents: the Baidrag complex with the Burd Gol accretionary complex to the south, and a northern continent that forms the basement for the Hangai region. Subduction was towards the SW with NE-directed ophiolite obduction onto a passive margin represented by the Dzag zone.

This atlas is intended primarily for anybody who is interested in basic geology of Africa. Its originality lies in the fact that the regional geology of each African nation or territory is reviewed country-wise by maps and text, a view normally not presented in textbooks of regional geology. It is my belief, that there has long been a need in universities and geological surveys, both in Africa and in the developed world, for summarizing geological maps and an accompanying basic text utilising the enormous fund of knowledge that has been accumulated since the beginning of geological research in Africa in the mid–19th century. I hope that, in part, the present atlas may satisfy this need.

Dictionary of Geology / Геологический словарь

Introduction

This dictionary contains 7703 entries which cover definitions of terms relevant to Geology. Because of the overlap which exists between the many branches of the Earth Sciences, for example between Geomorphology and Sedimentology or Palaeontology and Biology, some of the entries might be considered to be at the borders of Geology, but are included because of their importance to the subject.

For reasons of economy of space, I have concentrated on producing concise definitions of the entries rather than longer treatments. If further information should be required about any particular entry, it should be sought from the 432 references, arranged by topic, provided in the Bibliography, which lists modern works covering all aspects of Geology.

Collision and collapse at the Africa–Arabia–Eurasia subduction zone (Коллизия и коллапс в Африкано-Аравийско-Евразийской зоне субдукции)

Настоящий сборник включает в себя 13 работ, в которых рассматриваются различные вопросы геодинамики, стратиграфии, истории геологического развития, магматизма, метаморфизма, кинематики региона, находящегося на стыке Африки, Саудовской Аравии и восточной Европы с позиций тектоники плит, т.е. как зоны субдукции и связанной с ней орогении.

The Society makes every effort to ensure that the scientific and production quality of its books matches that of its journals. Since 1997, all book proposals have been refereed by specialist reviewers as well as by the Society’s Books Editorial Committee. If the referees identify weaknesses in the proposal, these must be addressed before the proposal is accepted.

Once the book is accepted, the Society Book Editors ensure that the volume editors follow strict guidelines on refereeing and quality control. We insist that individual papers can only be accepted after satisfactory review by two independent referees. The questions on the review forms are similar to those for Journal of the Geological Society. The referees’ forms and comments must be available to the Society’s Book Editors on request.

Although many of the books result from meetings, the editors are expected to commission papers that were not presented at the meeting to ensure that the book provides a balanced coverage of the subject. Being accepted for presentation at the meeting does not guarantee inclusion in the book.
