In civil engineering, tunnel construction has always been based on observations far more than any other construction. Reason for this phenomenon can be seen in the fact, that there is no other condition as decisive as the changing ground conditions in underground construction. Observational methods by their nature are subject of experience, especially when using predominantly manual methods for construction. Experience can be explained as kind of data base of an individual.

For decades, the base of the Hettangian (the Triassic-Jurassic system boundary) in the terrestrial succession of the Newark Supergroup of eastern North America has been placed incorrectly at a stratigraphic level that coincides with a modest palynological turnover immediately beneath the lowest basalt flow of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP), e.g. the Orange Mt. Basalt in the Newark basin or the North Mountain Basalt in the Fundy basin (see review in Whiteside, et al., 2007). According to numerous studies (reviewed in Whiteside, et al., 2007),

After every major earthquake, the Earth rings like a large bell for several days. These free oscillations of the Earth are routinely detected at modern broad-band seismographic stations, which are now distributed globally. The eigenfrequencies and decay rates of the vibrations can be measured and used to constrain the radial and lateral distribution of density, seismic wave speed and anelastic attenuation within the interior.

The formation of ore deposits and their broader-scale mineral systems requires the conjunction of several essential parameters including their geodynamic setting in the contemporaneous tectonic regime and their subsequent preservation in the ensuing tectonic regimes affecting their formational site. Therefore it is not surprising that there is a close connection between global tectonic regimes, among other factors such as source of ore components and structural pathways to formational sites, and global metallogeny.

This volume brings together 36 of the manuscripts that were presented as oral or poster papers at the Third International Fluvial Sedimentology Conference hosted by Colorado State University in August, 1985. The conference was co-sponsored by the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists and the U.S. Geological Survey with additional support and cooperation from Conoco, Inc., Rocky Mountain Energy, Mobil Corporation, the Rocky Mountain Section-SEPM, and the College of Forestry and Natural Resources and the Department of Earth Resources of Colorado State University.

Tides have fascinated humans for millennia. Their regularity and their apparent correlation with lunar behavior intrigued natural philosophers, even the Greeks, who live on an essentially tideless sea although there are strong tidal currents in localized constrictions. Apparently, they learned about tides from areas outside the Straits of Gibralter and from the Arabs who experienced signifi cant tides in the Persian Gulf. From a practical perspective, tidal changes in water elevation and the currents associated with these changes were of great importance for shipping and military purposes. In areas such as the countries surrounding the southern North Sea, such considerations required accurate tidal predictions, which in turn drew the attention of some of the greatest astronomers and mathematicians. 

If I were, at about age twenty as a budding paleozoologist and paleoartist, handed a copy of this book by a mysterious time traveler, I would have been shocked as well as delighted. The pages would reveal a world of new flesh- and, in some cases, plant-eating dinosaurs and ideas that I barely had a hint of or had no idea existed at all. My head would spin at the revelation of the therizinosaurs, such as the wacky feathered Beipiaosaurus, and at the biplane flying dromaeosaurs, not to mention the little halszkaraptors with their duck-like beaks, the brow horns and atrophied arms of bulldog-faced Carnotaurus, or the bat-like membranous wings of scansoriopterygids.
